With the weather changing and the sunlight waning, now is the perfect time to consider laser hair removal. Here are some reasons why.
Sun exposure can be more easily avoided. With the days shorter, weather cooler, and more clothes needed, it’s much easier to avoid the sun this time of year. A must when having the treatment.
More time to get treatments to get in. Anywhere from 6-12 total treatments are usually needed, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. So, it is possible to complete treatment before sun exposure becomes an issue again.
Results will be seen by Spring/Summer. By the time you get to the warmer months and more skin is showing, results will be noticeable by then.
As you can see, now is the best time to schedule laser hair removal treatment. Call us at 716-688-0020 or click here to schedule a complimentary consultation.
Here at Lisa S. Ball FNP in Buffalo, NY we have the LightSheer DUET device which provides patients with the fastest and most effective treatment for laser hair removal.
With the widely successful release of Drake’s new album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’, the Canadian rapper seems to have everything going his way lately. But this was not the case in regards to his hair after a recent bout with COVID-19. He stated on his Instagram that the virus actually left him dealing with some hair loss.
“I had Covid that s— grew in weird. I had to start again 😂 it’s coming back don’t diss.”
– Drake (@champagnepapi) on Instagram
The most likely reason for the thinning could be attributed to a relatively common condition known as telogen effluvium. This temporary form of hair loss occurs when a stressor (ex. fever, illness, childbirth, or emotional stress) causes more hair than usual to fall out. During which, it is not unusual for large clumps of hair to come out at a time. Usually occurring about 2-3 months after the stressor event, it can last anywhere from 6-9 months. After that timeframe, the excessive shedding wanes and the hair reverts back to its previous thickness. It’s important to note, however, that if the stressor continues, so will the shedding.
So, it looks like Drake’s hair woes will be gone soon enough. If you believe that you may be experiencing telogen effluvium, contact our office today. Here at Lisa S. Ball NP, we specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases of the hair, skin, and nails.
Viviscal PRO is one of the most popular products at our office. In offering patients an option for hair loss, it’s no wonder why. But what exactly is it, and how effective?
What is Viviscal PRO?
Viviscal PRO is a 100% drug-free dietary supplement that nourishes thinning hair and promotes healthier hair growth from within.
How does Viviscal PRO work?
Viviscal PRO is scientifically formulated with the proprietary AminoMar marine complex which helps to nourish thinning hair and encourage existing hair growth.
How often do I need to take it?
Take one tablet twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, with food and water. It is suggested to take that dosage for at least 6 months for the best results.
How long will it take to see progress?
Patients may notice progress in as little as 3 months.
Will I need to take it forever?
No, it is recommended to take it for 8-9 months (however, most patients continue to take Viviscal beyond that timeframe for their overall hair health). The first 6 months, twice a day. Then in the following 2-3 months, just once a day. After that, if the thinning of the hair starts again, it is recommended for the patient to find out if there is an underlying cause at play. Most of the time, if the underlying reason for hair thinning is not being managed, the excess shedding will continue.
As you can see, Viviscal PRO is an ideal option for patients looking to improve the look and feel of their hair. Contact our office today to get started.

This booster is great for eczema because it was specifically developed with the skin condition in mind. Offering a combination of redness relieving ingredients, it’s perfect for minimizing the appearance of skin redness and dryness. In doing that, the overall appearance of the skin is improved with a smoother texture and more even tone.
Overall, the ZO Skin Health Rozatrol is a phenomenal option for eczema that provides patients instant relief and cumulative benefits as they continue with the treatment. As summer winds down and the school year begins, everyone wants clear skin to start out the semester. So, what can you do to get it? We recommend one of our most popular treatments, the HydraFacial!
What is a HydraFacial?
The HydraFacial is a medical-grade treatment that deeply cleanses, extracts, and hydrates the skin.
How can the HydraFacial help with acne & blemishes?
During the process, pores are cleansed and debris is removed from the skin. This allows for better penetration of skincare products, which in turn, provides a highly effective treatment for acne and blemishes.
Who is a candidate for the HydraFacial?
The HydraFacial is suitable for patients of all ages (12 and up) and for any skin type.
Does it hurt?
No. The HydraFacial is a gentle, non-invasive treatment.
When are results seen?
Results are seen immediately after treatment. Most patients describe their skin after treatment as having a fresh, vibrant glow.

If you are looking to improve the appearance of your skin, then dermaplaning may be for you. As a non-invasive treatment for the face, it is a great option for patients looking for gentle exfoliation. At the Lisa S. Ball, NP Building, our aesthetician Jamie Popp is well versed and experienced with this specific treatment.
Utilizing a special medical-grade scalpel, everything from dirt, oil, dead skin, and ‘peach fuzz’ are all removed during the process. This leaves the skin fresher, smoother, and brighter-looking immediately after. But those aren’t the only benefits of dermaplaning, here are some others:
No downtime
Suitable for all skin types
Helps makeup apply better
Allows skincare products to penetrate deeper and enhances their absorption
Addresses fine lines and wrinkles
Helps diminish the appearance of acne scars
Stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells
Leaves the skin with an overall dewy look
Helps to even out skin tone
A great add-on to chemical peels, facials, or HydraFacials
As you can see, dermaplaning has a variety of benefits. It’s important to note, however, that the skill and experience of the person doing the treatment has a big influence as well. Contact our office today to learn more about the process and schedule an appointment.
Working in dermatology for over 10 years, I know the significance of an annual skin cancer examination. But recently, I had my first at our office with Nurse Practitioner Lisa Ball (PhD, FNP-BC). Before that, I would usually just get a specific mole checked out, never a full-body exam. And I have to say, I don’t know why I waited so long.
The visit began with Lisa’s assistant Vicki gathering my medical history. From there, she then asked my reason for coming in. I explained to her that after a recent visit with my primary doctor, he recommended that I get my moles checked out. After finishing with my history, Vicki then gave me a medical exam gown to get changed into and left the room.
A couple of minutes later, Lisa came in and began her examination. It was really interesting to observe firsthand as she used a dermatoscope (a handheld device used to check skin lesions) from head to toe. Throughout the assessment, she paid close attention to hard-to-see areas such as the scalp and the back. Marked out suspicious spots, took pictures of them (for future reference), and even took a biopsy of a lesion on the back of my leg. To say she was thorough would be an understatement. Thirty minutes was allocated for my appointment, and she used every minute.
One thing I want to mention is just how good of a job Lisa did in making me feel comfortable and at ease (because let me tell you, standing in front of your boss in your underwear can be just a tad intimidating). But in all seriousness, this is something I hear all the time from her patients and it shows how great of a provider she truly is.
If you too would like to schedule an appointment with Lisa, or any of our other providers, contact our office today. Remember, when it comes to skin cancer, the best prevention is early detection!
If you have ever gardened, hiked, or camped, odds are you crossed paths with poison ivy. And it probably wasn’t the most pleasant experience either, as it can severely irritate the skin. So, we figured to answer some common questions we get about the notorious plant so you are better equipped the next time you come in contact with it.
What is poison ivy?
Poison ivy is a member of the Toxicodendron plant family. It can grow as either a shrub or a climbing vine. Most show the three-leaflet formation typical of a Toxicodendron, although this can vary.
What causes the skin reaction?
Surprisingly, the plant itself does not cause irritation. It’s actually the allergenic oil it contains (urushiol) that does. Depending on the individual’s sensitivity and degree of exposure, the reaction can range anywhere from mild itching and redness to severe discomfort and blistering in the affected areas.
When will symptoms show?
Most people develop symptoms within 24-48 hours after exposure.
Does everyone experience a reaction?
Interestingly enough, not everyone will have a reaction to poison ivy. About 15% of people are actually not allergic to urushiol.
What to do if you believe you may have come in contact with it?
If you suspect you may have come in contact with poison ivy, wash your skin right away using lukewarm, soapy water. The sooner you can wash it, the better. Also, make sure to wash any clothing and/or footwear that may have come in contact. And if you were out with your dog, rinse them (and their leash) off, as the oil can actually stick to their fur. It’s important to note, that when handling anything that may have come in contact with poison ivy, the oils can spread to your skin. So, always make sure to wear gloves.
What to do if you develop a rash or blisters?
As with any rash, avoid touching it. This can worsen it and cause an infection. If you have any blisters, also leave them alone. Popping it can leave the exposed skin vulnerable to infection.
How can discomfort be eased or treated?
One of the best ways to soothe your skin is with short, lukewarm baths. Adding colloidal oatmeal to it will help with the itching. For further itching relief, try using a calamine or hydrocortisone cream/lotion. And then finally, if needed, an antihistamine. Just make sure not to apply an antihistamine topically, as it can worsen the rash and itch.
If you believe you may have come in contact with poison ivy, contact our office right away. Early treatment is crucial in treating the associated skin conditions.
With July being Hyperpigmentation/Melasma Awareness Month, we thought it would be the perfect time to highlight an ideal treatment for both conditions, the HydraFacial with the Britenol booster.
Now while the HydraFacial itself is a great treatment for hyperpigmentation and melasma, adding the Britenol booster takes it to the next level! Containing Alpha-Arbutin and Vitamin C, this popular HydraFacial add-on was specifically formulated to address dark or brown spots that are the result of aging or sun exposure. Aside from that, it also helps to nourish the skin. This, in turn, leaves the skin radiant with a much more even tone.
If you’re looking for a brighter complexion and just overall healthier skin, then the HydraFacial with the Britenol booster is for you! Contact our office today to schedule an appointment.
