Hair Transplantation Procedure | FUT & FUE Techniques
Hair transplantation has evolved significantly from its early days when circular “plugs” of skin were transplanted from the back of the scalp to bald areas. This outdated method, commonly used before the 1990s, often resulted in unnatural-looking hairlines and noticeable scarring on the donor area. Today, modern techniques like FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) provide superior results with minimal scarring and a more natural appearance.
Advanced Hair Transplantation Techniques: FUT & FUE
- FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): A thin strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the back of the scalp. This strip is divided into smaller grafts, which are carefully implanted into the recipient area after microscopic incisions are made. The transplanted hair remains dormant for up to three months before resuming normal growth at a rate of about ½ inch per month.
- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): In FUE, individual hair grafts are harvested one by one from a larger donor area to ensure sufficient grafts without noticeable density loss. The placement of the grafts is identical to FUT, ensuring a natural and seamless result.
Both methods ensure natural-looking hairlines, minimal scarring, and long-lasting results. Dr. Michael Shehata and his team provide expert care, ensuring that each procedure is customized for the best possible outcome.

Hair Transplantation FAQs
Hair grows gradually, about a ½” every month, so some patients may first notice growth in as little as 3-4 months after the procedure (although expect about one full year for all hairs to have sprouted). The surrounding hair around the donor site (the area where the hair is taken from, usually residing on the back of the scalp) covers up the scar(s) left behind from both FUT and FUE Hair Transplantation. Even if someone were to “thumb” through the hair, they would have to have a trained eye and really know what they are looking for. After the grafts are placed, scabs will eventually appear as the grafts settle into the scalp. The scabs are most noticeable in the first 10-14 days, but with regular saline soaks to the scalp and avoiding trauma to the scalp (ie. hitting your head on a cupboard), the scabs may come off sooner. After that, there will be a faint, pinkish hue that is left behind in the area (which will fade completely over the coming days). Most people take off about a week, it depends on the job though. It is the ONLY permanent solution to hair loss to date. If there is trauma caused to the scalp, such as banging your head on something within a few days after the procedure or heavy lifting, then yes it can happen. Prior to the procedure, patients are extensively educated on how to properly preserve the graft, and if it does happen to fall out, it is rather easy to reinsert into the scalp.
