While laser tattoo removal is a relatively safe procedure, it is important that our patients stay well informed prior, during and after they are treated. Does it hurt? What does it feel like?
It can best be described as a hot, stinging sensation. During treatment we keep our patients as comfortable as possible by using an ice pack on the treated area and the Zimmer cooling machine.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on the quality of ink used and the chemical composition. Darker skin generally requires more treatment.
How is the tattoo removed?
Laser pulverizes the ink then the immune system slowly carries it away the broken down ink.
Are certain colors harder to treat?
Yes. Blues, greens, pastels, and teals.
Are there any preparations necessary before treatment?
You can not expose yourself to the sun, tanning booths, self tanning products, or any medications that cause light sensitivity.
How will the area look after treatment?
Right after treatment the area will have an ashen look, this is temporary.
Are there any side effects?
You will notice a slight sting similar to sunburn. You may also notice redness, swelling, blistering (superficial), and bruising. As long as you follow treatment protocol side effects should stay limited to these.
How much does it cost?
Depends on the size of the area treated.
How far apart are treatments?
Treatments are typically spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
Are older tattoos harder to remove?
No, but it has to be at least three months because it has not settled (treatment will not be effective old tattoo may be easier to remove.
Can I go out into the sun?
In the first few months exposure to the sun can cause pigment changes. Due to this it is highly recommended that the area treated has a physical sun block, whether it be with a bandage or an article of clothing. If you do choose to go out in the sun during this time you risk pigment changes, scarring or severe sunburn. After two months you will be able to go in the sun.
